Strengthening Residential Life Through Professional Learning

The Teaching and Learning Centre recently concluded the inaugural Pathways to Communication programme, for Assistant Boarding Housemasters/Housemistresses, a professional learning initiative designed to strengthen communication practices within Aitchison’s boarding community.

Over 16 hours of guided training and independent study, Assistant Housemasters and Housemistresses engaged deeply with contemporary residential life practices, explored relevant reading material, and delivered presentations on themes connected to boarding culture, pastoral care, communication, and leadership The programme also provided a valuable opportunity for pastoral staff to collaborate closely, exchange ideas, build stronger professional bonds and collegiality across the boarding houses in Junior, Prep & Senior School.

Recognising that language development extends beyond the classroom, the programme reinforced the important role pastoral staff play in modelling confident communication, shaping positive boarding cultures, and supporting the holistic development of students. Through initiatives such as these, the TLC continues to advance Aitchison’s commitment to excellence in residential education, character formation, and high standards of pastoral care.
