From Aitchison to the World: Navigating Global University Admissions

On Saturday, 12th September, H1 parents were welcomed to the Old Building for a University Admissions Information Session designed to provide students' families with an overview of the university planning process and guidance on how best to support their sons as they begin their A Levels.

Dr Naila Burney Chughtai, Head of All International and National Admissions (except US), opened the session with a presentation on university admissions across local and international destinations. Sharing recent university outcomes, she highlighted the range of pathways available to Aitchison students and emphasised the importance of keeping an open mind and considering multiple options when planning for university.

Ms Sarah Malik, Head of US Admissions, followed with a presentation focusing specifically on the US university admissions process. She addressed some of the questions most frequently raised by parents, including scholarships and financial aid, developing a balanced college list, identifying universities that offer the right academic, financial, and personal fit, and managing expectations within an increasingly competitive US admissions landscape.

A central message throughout both presentations was the importance of academic performance during the "A Level" years. Parents were reminded that while extracurricular activities, leadership, service, and other interests can add important dimensions to a student's profile, they should complement rather than come at the expense of academics. Students were encouraged to pursue meaningful involvement while maintaining a healthy and purposeful balance.

The presentations also reinforced the value of starting the university planning process early. By engaging with the counselling team during H1, students and families have time to explore different options, understand requirements, identify areas for development, and make informed decisions rather than approaching university applications as a last-minute exercise.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing parents to raise questions directly with the counselling team. Parents were then invited to continue conversations informally over tea, bringing an informative and engaging morning to a close.
