Aitchison Delegation Meets Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, Dean of MIT's School of Science
The Aitchison College Science Society (ACSS) sent a student delegation to SundarSTEM School on Tuesday, 29th September 2026, for an interactive session with Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, Dean of the MIT School of Science. The delegation was accompanied by the Science Society Staff Advisor, Dr. Muhammad Kamran, and the Principal of Aitchison College, Dr. Syed Muhammad Turab Hussain.
The visit began with a lunch hosted at SundarSTEM School, where the delegation had the opportunity to meet and interact with Dr. Mavalvala in an informal setting. This provided the students with a valuable opportunity to engage with one of the world’s leading experimental physicists and learn about her experiences in science and academia.
The delegation then proceeded to the main session, where Dr. Mavalvala spoke about her journey into experimental physics and her pioneering work in the detection of gravitational waves. Drawing upon her experiences as a scientist and researcher, she discussed the challenges and discoveries that have shaped her career while offering students insight into the nature of experimental research and scientific innovation.
The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer discussion, during which Aitchison students interacted directly with Dr. Mavalvala on topics ranging from pursuing research at a young age and developing the skills required to become an experimental physicist to the growing role of artificial intelligence in scientific research. Students also explored how schools can foster a stronger culture of original research and encourage young scientists to move beyond classroom learning.
The visit provided the delegation with a rare opportunity to learn directly from a distinguished scientist at the forefront of modern physics. It reflected the Aitchison College Science Society’s continued commitment to exposing students to leading figures in STEM, encouraging scientific curiosity, and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with research and innovation.
