Aitchison College congratulates its alumni on their election successes
We congratulate the following Old Boys, among others, on their ministerial appointments following the recent general elections.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi (1963 – 1975)
Old Aitchisonian Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi is a renowned politician, presently serving as the Foreign Minister of Pakistan for the second time. He previously served as Foreign Minister during the PPP government in 2008-2013.
Shah Mahmood studied at Aitchison College from 1963 – 1975. At Aitchison, he was a school Prefect. He received a Bachelor’s degree in history from Forman Christian College. Qureshi also received a Master’s degree in law and Politics from University of Cambridge (England).
Qureshi started his political career in 1983 and was first elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab from Multan in 1985. He became Multan District Council Chairman in 1987 and later on remained Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) of Punjab for nine years from 1985 to 1993. He served as Provincial Minister for Planning and Development from 1988 to 1990 and as Minister for Finance from 1990 to 1993.
Later, he joined Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and was elected Member National Assembly (MNA) from Multan in 1993. In the 2002 general elections, Shah Mahmood Qureshi again won as MNA from Multan. In the 2008 general elections, he retained his seat for a third time as MNA from Multan. Qureshi was appointed Foreign Minister for the first time by PPP in 2008. In 2011, he parted ways with PPP after 20 years and joined PTI where he was appointed as Vice Chairman of the party.
In the recently held general elections, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Qureshi won as MNA from Multan and has been made part of the Cabinet as the Foreign Minister.
Pervez Khattak (1962 – 1969)
Old Aitchisonian Pervez Khattak is a prominent politician, presently serving as the Defence Minister of Pakistan.
Hailing from Manki Sharif village in nowshera district, Pervez Khattak joined Aitchison College in 1962 and left the College after his Inter Examination at Aitchison College from 1962 – 1969. At Aitchison, he was a House Prefect and received the Full School Blazer in 1968. He was Captain of the football, hockey and riding teams. He completed his undergraduate degree at Gordon College, Rawalpindi.
He entered active politics from the platform of PPP in 1983 when he became a member of the district council. He was elected as member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly for the first time in 1988.
Pervez Khattak served as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between 2013 and 2018. He has also remained Irrigation Minister of the province and served twice as Minister of Industries and Labour.
During his political career, Pervez Khattak also remained the provincial president of the Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao and Secretary General of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
In the recently held general elections 2018, Pervez Khattak was elected on both National Assembly and Provincial Assembly seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He resigned from the Provincial Assembly and retained his National Assembly seat. He was inducted into Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Cabinet and assumed charge as Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Defence.
Makhdum Hashim Jawan Bakht (1986 – 1997)
Old Aitchisonian Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht is the current Provincial Minister of Punjab for Finance.
Hashim Jawan Bakht studied at Aitchison College from 1986 – 1997 when he took the intermediate Examination. At Aitchison, he was captain of the Water Polo team. He is a graduate of McGill University, Canada.
Prior to contesting the general elections in 2013, he was associated with the Banking Sector and has served as Vice President, Corporate & Investment Banking Division at Citibank.
In the 2013 elections, he was elected as Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab as an independent candidate but later joined Pakistan Muslim League (N). He resigned from the Punjab Assembly in May 2018 and joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He has also remained Chairman, Standing Committee on Finance.
Recently, in the July 25 elections, he was again elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab and inducted into the Provincial Cabinet as the Finance Minister of the country’s most populous province, Punjab.
Makhdoom Khusro Bukhtiar (1975 – 1988)
Old Aitchisonian Makhdoom Khusro Bukhtiar is a Pakistani government official who is at present the Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms. He has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since August 2018.
He was a member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab from 1997 to 1999. He was a member of National Assembly from 2002 to 2007 and again from June 2013 to April 2018. During his first tenure as Member of the National Assembly, he served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from September 2004 to November 2007.
He was a day boy in Aitchison College and was the Captain of Babur house riding team. Amongst many of his other achievements during his student life, he also won his house colors in Riding, Basketball and Water Polo. After graduating from Aitchison College in 1988, he received an LLB (Hons.) degree in 1994 from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Bar-at-Law degree from Lincoln's Inn in 1995.
He started his political career in 1997 by leaving his job at Orr, Dignam & Co and successfully contested for a seat in the Punjab Provincial Assembly as a member of PML-N. Later, he joined the PML-Q party and subsequently became the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. In 2013 elections he successfully contested independently and held a seat in the National Assembly of NA - 194, and the Provincial Seat of PP - 289. Later Mr. Bakhtiar joined PTI. He was re-elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of PTI from Constituency NA-177 (Rahim Yar Khan-III) in Pakistani general election, 2018.
Mr. Bakhtiar was named as Minister for Water Resources in the federal cabinet. However, on 20 August 2018, he was sworn in as Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms in the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfraz (1979 – 1991)
Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfraz is an old Aitchisonian, who is the current Provincial Minister of Punjab for higher education, and tourism, and is in office since 27 August 2018. He has been a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab since August 2018.
He was a day boy in Aitchison College and was associated with many extracurricular societies such as being the Joint Secretary and Vice President of Hobbies Club, being the Chief Editor of Aitchison Scientific and President of the Computer Society. He took active part in Alamgir House Debates and in sports. After graduating from Aitchison College in 1991, he went abroad for higher studies to university of Florida. He holds a degree in Bachelor of Science.
Mr. Yasir Humayun joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2013. He contested for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of PTI from Constituency NA-60 (Chakwal-I) in Pakistani general election, 2013. In 2018 general elections, he was elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab as a candidate of PTI from Constituency PP-21 (Chakwal-I).
On 27 August 2018, he was inducted into the provincial Punjab cabinet of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar and was appointed as Provincial Minister of Punjab for higher education with the additional ministerial portfolio of tourism.
Sardar Muhammad Asif Nakai (1973 -1975)
Sardar Muhammad Asif Nakai is an Old Aitchisonian who has been a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, since August 2018. Previously he was a Member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab from 2008 to 2018 and a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2002 to 2007.
He was a Boarder in Kelly House. He was a very keen student and an active participant in College activities. After graduating from Aitchison College in 1975, he went to Punjab University and graduated with a degree in Bachelors of Arts in 1983.
He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML-Q) from Constituency NA-141 (Kasur-IV) in Pakistani general election, 2002. In September 2004, he was inducted into the federal cabinet and was made Minister of State for Housing and Works.
He was elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab as a candidate of PML-Q from Constituency PP-183 (Kasur-IX) in Pakistani general election, 2008. Sardar Muhammad Asif Nakai was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab as a candidate of PML-Q from Constituency PP-183 (Kasur-IX) in Pakistani general election, 2013.
He was re-elected to the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab as a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from Constituency PP-180 (Kasur-VII) in Pakistani general election, 2018.
On 27 August 2018, he was inducted into the provincial Punjab cabinet of Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar.
