Aitchison Introduces Rugby Union

Dear Parents,

Aitchison is offering Rugby for U16 and Open boys in 2016. I have great familiarity with the sport and the Pakistan Rugby Association is supporting our coaching efforts. Approximately fifty boys have shown interest in learning the game.

Because it is a physical game, we will take boys through the skills and rules carefully; beginning with touch rugby (no tackling), moving to Rugby Sevens (reduced tackling) and then finally Rugby Union of 15 per side. This will take time.

One of our unused grounds will be converted with goals and marked out with touch lines. Only senior boys will play this year. Hopefully, we can have House Rugby Sevens in the near future. Boys will need football boots and other game specific clothing.

It is essential for parents to give their approval for their sons to participate. A formal approval form will be given to boys to take home for consideration.

I am in favour of a ‘contact’ sport for boys who enjoy this type of competition. It is disciplined and offers opportunity for higher selection beyond school. We intend holding our first practice in the third or fourth week of Term 1 after fitness checks and meetings.

Any parent who wishes to discuss this initiative is welcome to approach the College.

Warm wishes,

Michael Thomson M.A., Dip. Ed., M.A.C.E
